Under-Ice Surfaces

Keeping a Handle on the Chill Factor

Making and maintaining perfect ice conditions at the Winter Games is as much an art as it is a science:

  • Figure skaters prefer softer ice, so they can dig in with their toe picks for jumps
  • Ice hockey players want hard ice for faster skating
  • In curling, water droplets ("pebbles") sprayed onto the ice surface help the stone to "curl"

Adding STYROFOAM™ Brand SM Insulation or STYROFOAM™ Brand HIGHLOAD Insulation (4060 or 100) below the ice at the Richmond Olympic Oval, the Vancouver Olympic & Paralympic Centre, the Killarney Ice Rink and the UBC Thunderbird Arena:

  • Reduces energy costs and refrigeration requirements
  • Reduces ice-making and deicing time, by maintaining more consistent temperatures
  • Reduces frost penetration into subsoil and potential for heaving of the slab
